In a shocking turn of events, the Ooni Crownland Estate, commonly known as Damico, which houses a significant number of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) students, became the scene of terror early Tuesday morning when armed gunmen stormed the community. The brazen attack targeted two student hostels, Dominion and an unnamed hostel situated near E and E restaurant in the heart of the estate.
The assailants, who struck at approximately 2:08 am, created an atmosphere of fear and chaos as they indiscriminately fired shots during their operation. Startled students, residents of the estate, woke up to the terrifying sounds of gunfire, leaving them in a state of unrest.
It is a relief that no lives were lost despite the attack having the potential to be disastrous. However, one student fell victim to a gunshot wound, and the criminals made off with valuable items such as laptops and mobile phones.
The wounded student is currently receiving medical treatment in the hospital and is expected to be discharged once deemed fit.
Upon receiving notification of the incident, the Central Executive Council (CEC) of the Great Ife Students' Union took swift action by promptly informing relevant security authorities. These authorities include the Area Commander and the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Moore Police Division, the Chief Security Officer (CSO) of OAU Security, and the Quick Response Squad (QRS) of the University.
The leadership of the Students' Union, committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of its members, plans to engage with the Landlord Association of the estate and the Police Department. The goal is to address security concerns and enhance the safety of union members residing in the estate and other areas of Ile-Ife. The Students' Union underscores its dedication to creating an environment where insecurity does not overshadow academic pursuits.
In a Press release, the Great Ife Students' Union urged its members to remain vigilant and security-conscious, urging them to report any potential security threats promptly to the appropriate authorities.
